§ 24-6. Unlawful signs, sign structures.

  • It shall be unlawful for any person to erect, place or use within the city the following signs or sign structures:

    (a)

    Swinging projecting signs;

    (b)

    Snipe signs;

    (c)

    Sidewalk and sandwich signs;

    (d)

    Banners, except as permitted in sections 24-32, 24-99, 24-125 and 24-127;

    (e)

    Off-premises signs;

    (f)

    Signs which involve motion or rotation of any part of the sign structure or sign face, or any sign structure or sign face using intermittent lights, animation or automatically changed copy or design, except a time and temperature unit which is part of a permitted sign, and further except electronic message boards as permitted in sections 24-77(b), 24-78(g), 24-79(g), and 24-124(4).

    (g)

    Roof signs unless the community appearance board, to preserve the architectural integrity of the existing facade, permits such a sign;

    (h)

    Vehicle signs;

    (i)

    Any sign illumination, except as permitted and approved by the community appearance board;

    (j)

    Signs which emit a sound, odor or visible matter;

    (k)

    Illuminated signs in R-1 and R-2 districts, except as provided in section 24-77(b);

    (l)

    Signs which obstruct free ingress to or egress from a required door, window, fire escape or other required exitway;

    (m)

    Signs and/or sign structures which obstruct the view of, may be confused with, purport to be a governmental or traffic direction/safety sign, or any other sign or group of signs which create a traffic hazard as determined by the city;

    (n)

    Signs or sign structures other than freestanding and vertical wall extensions, any portion of which extends above the parapet, building roof line or canopy against which the sign is located;

    (o)

    Any sign with an exposed unshielded light source which does not comply with the terms, conditions and provisions contained in this chapter and ordinances amendatory thereof and supplemental thereto;

    (p)

    Painted wall signs;

    (q)

    Cold-air balloons;

    (r)

    Any sign or sign structure in the public rights-of-way; or

    (s)

    Any other type or kind of sign which does not comply with the terms, conditions and provisions contained in this chapter and ordinances amendatory thereof and supplemental thereto.
